The other candidates don't.bill jhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15621462975674718496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3564864683183121263.post-41515670822223005472008-02-19T10:58:00.000-08:002008-02-19T10:58:00.000-08:00Fair comment - I appear to have amalgamated your p...Fair comment - I appear to have amalgamated your position with that of others who are roughly on "your side".

I'll change it to make it more accurateanonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00432489356958540355noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3564864683183121263.post-83381995649462206992008-02-19T10:50:00.000-08:002008-02-19T10:50:00.000-08:00Just a clarifying note - my argument is not about ...Just a clarifying note - my argument is not about 'legitimacy' or any such thing. Although it's clearly true that the BNP claims that its appearances on the likes of the OXford Union platform represents a 'coming in from the cold', neither they nor anybody else seriously believe this - viz the enraged editorialisation against having to share a platform with David Irving. They know, we know and everybody else knows that they're basically a gallery of freaks in such circumstances.

The actual source of their legitimacy is the vacation of the pro-welfare-state etc agenda by the Labour Party, and the concomitant immiseration of layers of the working class, as many people pointed out during the meeting. I am suspicious of the efficacy of debates in anti-fascist struggle because it just seems somewhat mismatched to the nature of fascism and - particularly in this period - the nature of fascist support.

Mine and Dave I's 'position paper' on all this is hopefully in this week's Worker, although there appeared to be a few copies floating around at the conference.Harley Filbenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07722993140646956149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3564864683183121263.post-74236558156328117062008-02-18T20:55:00.000-08:002008-02-18T20:55:00.000-08:00Much more interesting than the US left.Much more interesting than the US left.Frank Partisanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03536211653082893030noreply@blogger.com
